East Bali Private Car Charter: 7 Best Day Trip Routes for First-Timers

Most first-timers get the east side of Bali wrong: they base themselves in Ubud, book one group tour, and end up seeing Lempuyang from behind a queue of forty people. An East Bali private car charter fixes that.

Travelers get a car with air conditioning, a driver who knows every hairpin on the mountain roads, and the freedom to leave at 5:30 in the morning, skip the tour buses, and stop at the warung they actually want to eat at.

A good East Bali private car charter is also what makes the routes below fit into a single day.

This guide covers how to plan an East Bali private car charter, seven day trip routes, what each one costs in IDR, what time to leave, and where to eat: No filler, no vague advice.

TL;DR

  • Budget: IDR 600,000–1,200,000 for a full-day East Bali private car charter with driver from Ubud.
  • Leave early: 5:30–6:00 AM for Lempuyang. After 14:00 works too.
  • Best first route: Ubud, Tirta Gangga, Sidemen, and back.
  • Carry cash: most entry fees are paid at the gate, in cash, in IDR.
  • Book on WhatsApp and confirm your route the night before.

East Bali private car charter day tour visiting Lempuyang Temple, Tirta Gangga and Virgin Beach

Why an East Bali Private Car Charter Beats the Alternatives

Travelers have three options: renting a scooter, joining a group minibus, or hiring an East Bali private car charter.

The scooter is fun for an hour and miserable for six. The road to Lempuyang is about 75 kilometers of climbs, heat, and trucks, and by the time travelers reach the gate they are too tired to enjoy it. A group tour runs on someone else’s clock, which means twenty minutes at Tirta Gangga whether you like it or not.

A private car costs more on paper and saves you more in practice. Your driver handles the traffic, the parking chaos, and the ticket windows. Travelers control the pace. If the rice terraces look good, they stop. If they want to skip a temple, they skip it.

A good driver earns his fee twice: once for the driving, once for knowing which warung serves real babi guling and which one reheats yesterday’s buffet.

There is also the comfort argument. East Bali routes are long, hot, and mostly uphill on the way out. A clean car with working air conditioning, bottled water in the door pocket, and a driver who opens the door for you makes a six-hour day feel like a holiday instead of a shift.

After a morning at Lempuyang in 30-degree heat, climbing into a cool car is the best part of the trip. That is the version of Bali worth paying a bit more for.

What travelers get with a private driver

A proper charter driver is not just a man with a car.

He is your translator, your queue-jumper, and your local guide.

He knows which temples require sarongs on arrival, which car parks are scams, and which warungs feed the drivers (a reliable sign the food is good).

Most of our drivers have worked the east routes for years and can tell you the story of Tirta Gangga, the history of the Karangasem kings, and why the Lempuyang gates face the way they do. Ask questions.

They enjoy the company as much as the drive.

Lempuyang Temple Gates of Heaven with Mount Agung in East Bali

Route 1: Lempuyang, Tirta Gangga and the Classic East Bali Private Car Charter Day Trip

What most people call the east Bali loop is really three stops on one road: the Gates of Heaven at Lempuyang, the water palace of Tirta Gangga, and the rice terraces that fall away toward Sidemen.

With an East Bali private car charter, leave Ubud by 5:30 AM. The drive takes about two hours, and the gate opens early for a reason: the famous reflection shot needs the mirror pond empty, and it is empty only before the buses arrive. The rule is simple. Be at the parking lot before 7:00, or come back after 14:00.

Lempuyang asks for a donation plus a shuttle ride up the hill, so count on IDR 30,000–50,000 per person. Tirta Gangga is IDR 90,000 to enter. Both are cash only.

By 10:00 travelers can be sitting by the fountains at Tirta Gangga with the koi fish, and by noon they are eating nasi campur at a warung in Sidemen while the tour buses queue back at the gate you already saw.

A note on the famous gate photo

The Lempuyang “Gates of Heaven” shot involves a mirror held under the camera, a small queue, and a photographer who has done it ten thousand times.

Decide now whether it matters to you. If it does, go at opening and take your turn with good humor. If it does not, walk the temple complex above the gates instead, where the crowds thin out and the views over the valley are just as good.

Both are part of the same morning, and neither takes more than an hour.

Tirta Gangga Royal Water Palace pools in East Bali

Route 2: Sidemen, the Valley Most People Drive Past

Sidemen is the valley tourists drive through on the way to somewhere else — and that is exactly its appeal: steeper, greener rice terraces than Tegalalang, and crowds limited to a few hikers and the farmers themselves.

On an East Bali private car charter, the terraces cost nothing to look at. A short guided walk with a local farmer runs IDR 150,000–250,000, and it is worth it once: he will show you the irrigation system, the ducks, and the bit of the valley you cannot see from the road.

Park the car and walk the ridge between the river and the main road.

Where to eat: Warung Ida and Ume Anyar both serve the home cooking you hope for in Bali, jackfruit curry, fried tempeh, sambal matah, rice. A plate with three sides runs IDR 40,000–60,000.

Arrive after lunch. The morning light is harsh in the valley; by 14:00 the clouds roll over Mount Agung and the whole place turns soft and green.

Amed coast with traditional salt farms and fishing boats in East Bali

Route 3: Amed, Snorkeling and the Coast Road

Amed is not one town. It is a string of fishing villages, Jemeluk, Bunutan, Lipah, running along the coast for about 14 kilometers. The snorkeling is the draw: coral gardens right off the beach, and the wreck of the USAT Liberty a short drive north at Tulamben.

Costs: snorkel rental IDR 50,000–100,000, a local guide about IDR 150,000 for a couple of hours. Entry to the beach is free along most of the coast; Tulamben charges a small fee.

Leave by 7:00. The drive from Ubud takes about two and a half hours, and you want calm water before the wind picks up at midday. The fish come off the boats in the morning, so lunch is the meal to book: grilled snapper with rice and sambal at one of the beachfront warungs runs IDR 80,000–120,000.

Bring reef shoes and your own mask if you have them. The rental gear at Amed is functional but basic, and a mask that fits is the difference between a relaxed hour floating over the coral and a foggy one fighting a leak.

Sunscreen is a problem: the standard tourist kind damages the coral, so buy the reef-safe version in Ubud before you leave, or skip it and wear a rash guard.

Amed is a full day on its own, so plan it as its own East Bali private car charter rather than a squeezed add-on. If you only have one day, pair it with the coast road back through Tirta Gangga and call it the east coast day.

Virgin Beach Pasir Putih white sand and turquoise water in East Bali

Route 4: Tenganan and Virgin Beach (Pasir Putih)

Tenganan is the oldest village on the island, and it is nothing like the temple stops. The people here keep their own traditions, the double ikat weaving, the perang pandan ritual every June, and the village gets a fraction of the visitors it deserves.

Entry is by donation, IDR 20,000–50,000. Take the time to watch a weaver work. The cloth is made with a process that takes months per piece, and the patterns are unlike anything else on the island.

Ten minutes further down the coast is Virgin Beach, known locally as Pasir Putih. White sand, shallow turquoise water, and a row of fish stalls on the sand. Entry IDR 20,000, a sunbed IDR 50,000, grilled fish with rice IDR 60,000–100,000.

On an East Bali private car charter, do Tenganan in the morning and reach the beach by 11:00. Swim before lunch, eat after. By 14:00 the day-trippers from the cruise port start arriving.

Besakih Mother Temple on the slopes of Mount Agung in Bali

Route 5: Besakih and the Slopes of Mount Agung

Besakih is the mother temple of Bali, built on the slopes of Mount Agung at about 1,000 meters. It is huge, it is holy, and it is worth seeing properly, with a guide who explains the layout instead of a tout who drags you to a souvenir shop.

Temple entry and a guide run around IDR 150,000–250,000 per person. The whole visit takes two to three hours, and you will walk a lot of steps. Dress for a temple: sarong and sash, which are rented at the entrance for a few thousand rupiah.

Arrive in the morning, before the clouds close in. The drive from Ubud is about one and a half hours, an easy stretch on an East Bali private car charter. Pair Besakih with the road down toward Sidemen for a cultural day with the best views of Agung on the island.

When the mountain is clear, it is one of those views that makes you stop the car.

A word of warning about the approach road. As travelers near Besakih they will be waved at by people offering “parking guidance” and “official services” that are neither. Keep driving until the actual parking area, ignore the touts, and hold your entry ticket in your hand.

This is the one place on the east side where the pressure is constant, and a small amount of firm politeness saves you both money and mood.

Sidemen valley rice terraces and traditional village in East Bali

Route 6: Taman Ujung and the Quiet Coast at Candidasa

Taman Ujung is the water palace everyone forgets.

It was the summer palace of the Karangasem kings, it sits on a lake with Mount Agung behind it, and on a weekday morning you may have the place to yourself. Entry is IDR 100,000. Arrive at opening, 7:00, and you get the reflections and the silence.

From there, the coast road runs through Candidasa, a strip of guesthouses and warungs that never quite became a party town, which is its charm. Stop at Warung Bu Edi for curry. It has been there for decades and the locals still queue.

On an East Bali private car charter this is a short, easy day: one and a half hours from Ubud to Ujung, then a lazy afternoon on the coast. Good for your last day, when you want to be back at the hotel by dinner.

One tip for the drive: ask your driver to take the coastal road, not the inland shortcut. The coast road from Ujung to Candidasa hugs the shore past the salt pans and fishing boats, and it is one of the prettiest twenty minutes of driving on the island.

The inland route saves ten minutes and gives you nothing to look at.

Route 7: The Full Loop, Lempuyang, Sidemen, Amed in One Day

For travelers with exactly one day who want the whole east, this is the route to run on an East Bali private car charter: Ubud, Lempuyang, Tirta Gangga, Sidemen for lunch, the Amed coast, then back over the mountain.

It is a long day, ten hours in the car, so book an East Bali private car charter driver who does this loop regularly and knows the shortcut roads.

Leave at 5:00 AM. The costs stack up: Lempuyang donation and shuttle, Tirta Gangga, lunch, snorkel gear if you swim. Budget IDR 350,000–500,000 per person on top of the car.

Be honest with yourself about the end of the day. The drive back from Amed to Ubud is two and a half hours of dark mountain road. If that sounds like a bad idea after a swim, this is exactly why the driver earns the fee.

Split the loop if you have two days: day one takes the Lempuyang and Tirta Gangga side, day two runs the coast from Amed back through Tenganan and Virgin Beach. Travelers see the same highlights and sleep in a proper bed instead of a car seat, and the driver gets a sane schedule.

Most first-timers who try the full loop in one day end up skipping the last two stops anyway, so plan the split from the start.

East Bali Private Car Charter Costs and Practical Tips

💡 Tip: A full-day East Bali private car charter is cheaper than piecing together three separate transfers. Agree the route and an all-in price before you get in the car, and carry cash for temple entries — some stops in this guide do not accept cards.

💡 Golden rule: A private charter is a full-day commitment. Book the car for 10–12 hours so the driver never has to watch the clock, and agree on the route before you leave.

The best East Bali private car charter days end with a sunset, not a meter.

What the price includes

A standard charter covers the car, driver, fuel, and parking for 10–12 hours. Entry fees, meals, and tips are extra, and so is any overtime past the agreed hours.

Agree on the total price before getting in the car, and confirm it on WhatsApp in writing.

Which car should you choose?

For two people on an East Bali private car charter, a standard sedan or a compact SUV is plenty, and it is the cheapest option.

For three to five passengers, take the larger SUV or a minivan so nobody sits in the middle seat for three hours. If you are traveling with a baby, ask for a car with an anchor point for your own child seat, or book one in advance.

Couples on a honeymoon route often prefer the more comfortable SUVs on the long Amed day, and it is worth the small upgrade for the suspension alone on the mountain roads.

The 6:00 AM rule

Every East Bali private car charter route above works better with a 6:00 AM start.

Travelers beat the heat, the tour buses, and the worst of the traffic, and get home with time to swim before dinner.

If you are not a morning person, at least be honest about it: a 9:00 AM start at Lempuyang means a two-hour queue for the mirror shot and a return trip in the dark.

Tipping and cash

Tipping is not mandatory, but IDR 100,000–150,000 for a full day is normal when the driver has been good. Carry small notes.

Most east Bali stops take cash only, and ATMs are rare past Sidemen.
